Step 1: Purchase a Domain Name &
Create a Logo
- Choose your domain name before you start your website or business.
- You want to choose a domain name that matches your business name.
- Domain names can be up to 67 characters, but the longer or more complex the name, the harder it will be for people to remember.
- If you have not already done so, it’s time to create your company logo.
Beware scams that monitor domain name searches and automatically purchase those names. Do not go to a registrar and search for a name you want until you are ready to purchase it. Once you search for a name, if it is available, buy it immediately.
Step 2: Purchase a Web Hosting Service
- What features are offered?
- Is the host server reliable? Responsive? Downtime issues?
- How much server space do they provide?
- Verify any service limitations imposed on the amount of traffic your website can use per day / per month.
- What is the sign-up price? What is the renewal price?
- Do you require eCommerce features and support?
- How easy is it to access and user their control panel?
- Do they offer email hosting? Is there an additional expense? (person@yourdomain.com)
- What support services do they offer?
A word of caution on free site builders provided by web hosting companies: ensure they have a template you want to emulate before you buy. Be aware many free hosting companies will force you to display their logo or other ads on your site. Once you narrow down your choices, run a couple of searches and read people’s commentary.
