Creating Your New Site

Step 1: Purchase a Domain Name &
Create a Logo

Choose your domain name before you start your website or business.
You want to choose a domain name that matches your business name.
Domain names can be up to 67 characters, but the longer or more complex the name, the harder it will be for people to remember.
If you have not already done so, it’s time to create your company logo.

Beware scams that monitor domain name searches and automatically purchase those names. Do not go to a registrar and search for a name you want until you are ready to purchase it. Once you search for a name, if it is available, buy it immediately.

Step 2: Purchase a Web Hosting Service

What features are offered?
Is the host server reliable? Responsive? Downtime issues?
How much server space do they provide?
Verify any service limitations imposed on the amount of traffic your website can use per day / per month.
What is the sign-up price? What is the renewal price?
Do you require eCommerce features and support?
How easy is it to access and user their control panel?
Do they offer email hosting? Is there an additional expense? (person@yourdomain.com)
What support services do they offer?

A word of caution on free site builders provided by web hosting companies: ensure they have a template you want to emulate before you buy. Be aware many free hosting companies will force you to display their logo or other ads on your site. Once you narrow down your choices, run a couple of searches and read people’s commentary.

Step 3: Select a Site Builder and Template

Choose a site builder, theme and layout.
Depending on your needs, you may use the site builder offered by the web hosting service or you may want to purchase one that better suits your needs.
Once you find a site builder that you like, scroll through the many templates offered by your site builder until you find one that has the look and feel you want for your new site.
When choosing a template, take a few minutes to research website psychology. Your choice in colors, spacing and font will impact a user’s experience by eliciting specific emotional reactions.
If additional, purchase the site builder.

Step 4: Settings & Configurations

Configure the sites DNS.
Set up the SSL certificate (some browsers will show sites as ‘not secure’ without it).
Configure the theme site settings.
Set your company logo and favicon
Update blog settings and configurations.
Select a layout and create templates for use in creating additional pages.
If the site builder allows it, create a child theme to allow for customization to the theme and layout.

Step 5: Menu, Pages & Content

Create and deploy a ‘Coming Soon’ page.
If applicable, apply appropriate plugins.
Create pages based on the selected layout / template..
Add page content specific to your company.
If applicable, add blog content, specific to your company.
Once pages are published, create a primary menu.
Create a custom footer menu and, if possible, remove forced advertising.
If desired, create a blog page, configure categories, and create a blog template for future use.

Step 7: Test & Go Live!

Review and test all pages, buttons, links, etc.
